We are thrilled to announce that Dr Rhiannon MacKenzie has joined our fabulous team of female dentists at Camp Hill Dental, on a part-time basis.

Rhiannon is a gentle, caring dentist who particularly enjoys establishing and maintaining the dental care of families.  Rhiannon is happy to take the time to make every dental experience a positive one.  She places a strong emphasis on prevention of dental diseases. Rhiannon’s passion involves forming long-term relationships with patients, laying a foundation for healthy smiles for life.

Raised in regional Queensland, Rhiannon completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland, before completing a Bachelor of Dentistry with Honors at the University of Sydney in 2006.  She practiced in the thriving rural town of Goondiwindi as a senior dental officer for Queensland Health, and as an associate dentist in a private practice for 6 years.  Rhiannon then moved to Melbourne, where she worked at the University of Melbourne Dental School as a tutor and clinical demonstrator.  Finally, settling in Brisbane with her husband, Andrew, a local orthodontist.

Rhiannon is a dedicated mother of 3 young children, and enjoys camping and beach adventures with her family.  She is an avid cook and gardener and, when time permits, stays active with swimming, running and surfing.

Dental Education: Dental Decay & Sugars in Our Diets

Watching what we eat is a balancing act. As we all know, sugar in foods and drinks, whilst is our guilty pleasure, can start the tooth decay process.  Tooth decay is caused when bacteria in the mouth combine with the sugars and starches in food to produce acid.  This acid eats away at the tooth enamel (the protective outer layer of the tooth) and causes holes to form.

High Sugar + High Acids = High Dental Cavities

We agree wholeheartedly with the Australian Dietary Guidelines that we should all “consume only moderate amounts of sugars and foods containing added sugars.”  To keep your teeth healthy and help prevent dental decay, we also recommend that you limit how often you have sugary foods and drinks.  Tooth decay is not only dependent on the amount of sugar we eat or drink each day, but also how often we have sugary foods and drinks.

Teeth are naturally resilient and can sustain up to 4 acid attacks from sugary food or drinks per day, without resulting in tooth decay.  Count how many times your teeth are under an acid attack in one day – You may be surprised!

Packaged Fruit Juice…


Packaged fruit juice is often perceived as healthy.  This is an easy mistake to make, given that it is “natural” and has the word “fruit” is in it.  Often selected as a healthier option over soft drinks and energy drinks, many people fail to realise that fruit juice is loaded with sugar.  In fact, packaged fruit juice contains almost as much sugar and calories as some soft drinks.

Apple juice is one of the sweetest juices, and because it is comparatively cheap, is often used as a base in juice bars.  In a report by Choice, it found that fruit frappes and smoothies (such as those sold by Boost Juice), also contain high levels of sugar.  “Consumers should remember that fruit juice contains sugar, so the bigger the bottle, the bigger the sugary punch”.

Nutritionist Rosemary Staton describes fruit juice as “better than Coke, but not much”.


So, next time you are reaching for a cold sugary drink, see if you can resist the urge and have a glass of water and a piece of fruit instead.  Your teeth and your dentists will love you for it.
